How it works
How to use it
- Pick your grading scale (in the US it starts with percentages).
- Enter your current grade. If you don't know it, open the section to work it out from several grades.
- Enter how much the final is worth, as a percentage.
- Enter the grade you want in the class and read what you need on the final.
How it is calculated
The final grade is a weighted average: final = current × (1 − weight) + exam × weight. Solving for the exam, exam = (target − current × (1 − weight)) / weight. If the result is above the best grade on the scale, the target is out of reach; if it is below the worst, it is already secured. The average of several grades is Σ(grade × weight) / Σ weight.

About this calculator
How it works
A class grade is usually a weighted average: each part counts for a percentage. If you know where you stand and how much the final is worth, you can solve for the grade you need:
final exam = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − weight)) / weight
Example: you have an 85%, the final is worth 30% and you want a 90%. The 70% you already have contributes 59.5 points; to reach 90 you need 30.5 more, which on a 30% final is 30.5 / 0.3 = about 102%. Out of reach, unless there is extra credit. Aim for an 88% instead and you need a 95.
The bar
The bar is the grading scale, from lowest to highest. The gray dot is your current grade, the black one is the grade you want and the blue one is what you need on the final. If the blue dot sits at the very end, it will be tight.
If you don’t know your current grade
Open “Work out my current grade from several grades” and enter each grade with its weight: homework, quizzes, midterms, or credit hours if you want a GPA-style average. The calculator does the weighted average and, with one tap, uses it as your current grade.
Common letter grade cutoffs
| Letter | Typical cutoff |
|---|---|
| A | 90% |
| B | 80% |
| C | 70% |
| D | 60% |
Cutoffs vary by school and instructor (some use 93% for an A, or plus and minus grades), so check your syllabus.
Before you count on it
Check your syllabus: some classes drop the lowest grade, curve scores, require a minimum on the final or offer extra credit. The calculator does the math; your class rules decide.
Frequently asked questions
How is the grade I need calculated?
By running the weighted average backwards. If you have an 82%, the final is worth 25% and you want a 90%: 90 = 82 × 0.75 + final × 0.25, so the final has to be (90 − 61.5) / 0.25 = 114%. That's out of reach, and the calculator tells you the best you can get.
What grade do I need for an A, B or C?
It depends on your school's cutoffs. On a common scale an A is 90%, a B 80% and a C 70%. Enter the cutoff you are aiming for as the grade you want.
Does it work with other scales?
Yes. Pick your scale: percentage, 0 to 10, 0 to 20, 0 to 30, or the 1 to 5 and 1 to 6 scales, including those where 1 is the best grade.
What about weighted categories?
Open “Work out my current grade from several grades” and enter each category or assignment with its weight. The calculator works out the weighted average and can use it as your current grade.
