How it works

How to use it

  1. Enter the start and end time for each day you worked.
  2. Enter your unpaid break in minutes (for example, 30 for lunch).
  3. If every weekday is the same, fill in Monday and press “Copy Monday to Tuesday–Friday”.
  4. For pay, enter your gross hourly rate.
  5. Read the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.

How it is calculated

For each day, the start time is subtracted from the end time and the break is taken off; if the end time is earlier than the start, the shift runs past midnight and 24 hours are added. The total is the sum of the days, in hours and minutes (base 60) and in decimal hours (minutes divided by 60). Gross pay is total decimal hours times the hourly rate. Times are written as in ISO 8601.

About this calculator

Hours and minutes don’t add up like decimals

The most common mistake when adding hours by hand is treating them as ordinary numbers: 7.45 + 7.45 is not 15.30 hours. An hour has 60 minutes, so 7 h 45 min

  • 7 h 45 min is 15 h 30 min, which is 15.5 hours in decimal. The calculator gives you both: clock time, to check your records, and decimal hours, which is what gets multiplied by your hourly rate.
Minutes Decimal
15 0.25
20 0.33
30 0.5
40 0.67
45 0.75

Overnight shifts

If you start at 22:00 and finish at 06:00, the end time is “earlier” than the start. The calculator reads it as a shift that ends the next day and counts 8 hours. Enter it on the day it starts. Each day’s bar draws it in two pieces: up to midnight and from 00:00.

Breaks

Enter only the break that is unpaid, in minutes. Whether a break counts as working time depends on the law and your contract. In the European Union, the Working Time Directive (2003/88/EC) gives a right to a break when the working day is longer than six hours; its length is set by each country’s law or collective agreements.

Keeping your own record

Writing down your hours every day lets you compare them with your payslip and your employer’s records. This calculator helps you keep that count, but it doesn’t replace the official record.

What it doesn’t calculate

It adds up time. It doesn’t apply overtime, shift or holiday premiums, or taxes: they depend on the law and your contract. The pay figure is gross and approximate; for your payslip, always check with your employer or a professional.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. Payroll and spreadsheets often use this form: 30 minutes is 0.5 and 15 minutes is 0.25.

What if my shift ends after midnight?

It's handled automatically: if the end time is earlier than the start time (22:00 to 06:00), the calculator assumes you finished the next day and counts 8 hours. Enter the shift on the day it starts.

Does it calculate overtime?

No. It gives gross time worked. Overtime and premiums depend on the law and your contract, so check them with your employer or a professional.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. If you close the page, it's gone.
