How it works
How to use it
- Pick your grading scale (in South Korea it starts with percentages).
- Enter your current grade. If you don't know it, open “Work out my current grade from several grades”.
- Enter how much the final is worth, as a percentage.
- Enter the grade you want and read what you need on the final.
How it is calculated
The final grade is a weighted average: final = current × (1 − weight) + exam × weight. Solving for the exam, exam = (target − current × (1 − weight)) / weight. Above the best grade on the scale the target is out of reach; below the worst it is already secured. The average of several grades is Σ(grade × weight) / Σ weight.

About this calculator
How it works
A course grade is usually a weighted average: each part counts for a percentage. If you know where you stand and how much the final is worth, you can solve for the grade you need:
You need = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) / Weight
Example: you have a 70, the final is worth 40% and you want a 75. You need 82.5 on the final.
The bar
The bar is the grading scale, from worst to best. The gray dot is your current grade, the black one your target and the blue one what you need on the final.
If you don’t know your current grade
Open “Work out my current grade from several grades” and enter each grade with its weight: coursework, quizzes, midterms, or credits for a year average. The calculator does the weighted average and, with one tap, uses it as your current grade.
Grading scales
| Scale | Where | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 10 | Spain, Italy (school), Mexico | 5 (6 in Italy and Mexico) |
| 0 to 20 | France, Portugal, Belgium | 10 |
| 0 to 100% | US, UK, Australia | Varies |
| 1 to 6 (1 is best) | Germany | 4 |
| 1 to 6 (6 is best) | Switzerland | 4 |
Before you count on it
Check your course rules: some require a minimum on the final, round differently or give more weight to resits. The calculator does the maths; your course rules decide.
Frequently asked questions
How is the grade I need calculated?
By running the weighted average backwards. With a 70, a final worth 40% and a target of 75, you need 82.5 on the final.
What if the grade I need is above the top grade?
Then the target is out of reach with that exam, and the calculator tells you the best final grade you can still get. If it is below the lowest grade, you have already secured it.
Does it work with any scale?
Yes. Pick your scale: percentage, 0 to 10, 0 to 20, 0 to 30, or the 1 to 5 and 1 to 6 scales, including those where 1 is the best grade.
What if my course needs a minimum on the exam?
Some courses require a minimum mark on the final to pass. The calculator doesn't know your course rules: check your syllabus.
