How it works
How to use it
- Enter your weight in kilograms. Both a point and a comma work as the decimal separator.
- Enter your height in centimetres.
- Your BMI and its risk range appear as you type, without pressing any button.
How it is calculated
Weight is divided by the square of height in metres. The ranges follow the Health Promotion Board's cut-off points for adults in Singapore: below 18.5, low risk from 18.5 to 22.9, moderate risk from 23 to 27.4 and high risk from 27.5.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

About this calculator
What body mass index measures
Body mass index relates your weight to your height: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. At 70 kg and 1.75 m, that gives 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.
The ranges used in Singapore
| BMI | Health risk |
|---|---|
| below 18.5 | Risk of nutritional deficiencies and osteoporosis |
| 18.5 – 22.9 | Low risk (healthy range) |
| 23.0 – 27.4 | Moderate risk |
| 27.5 and above | High risk |
The World Health Organization’s general ranges treat 25 and above as overweight and 30 and above as obesity. Singapore uses lower cut-off points because in Asian populations the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease starts to rise at a lower BMI. This calculator uses the Singapore ranges.
What BMI tells you and what it doesn’t
BMI is quick and comparable, but it doesn’t know what your weight is made of. It doesn’t tell muscle from fat and says nothing about where that fat sits, and visceral fat, around the abdominal organs, matters far more metabolically than fat under the skin.
So someone with a lot of muscle can land in the moderate risk range with little body fat. Waist circumference is a useful extra measurement you can take at home: above 80 cm for Asian women and 90 cm for Asian men points to abdominal obesity.
This result is a guide, not a diagnosis. If you have doubts about your health, a doctor is the right person to ask.
